Swansea Maliphant intercity express depot Rail Construction

The Swansea Maliphant site is a combination of operational, disused and derelict sidings. This JBA contract involved providing project management tools and processes to support VolkerFitzpatick in redeveloping the site completely to provide a new depot and stabling for a new fleet of Hitachi trains.

The depot in Maliphant, Swansea, is one of three depots selected by Hitachi to house its new fleet of long-distance intercity express trains that will operate on the Great Western Mainline (GWML). This depot will support new trains entering service in 2017 and provide cleaning and overnight parking for up to eight trains.

The Maliphant site is currently operational. The works are therefore being undertaken in phases to ensure there is no disruption to First Great Western’s services operating from the site.

The new facilities include an inspection building, train washing facilities, controlled emission toilet pump room and fuel farm pump room. In order to complete the works, existing track and stabling areas are being cleared;including workshop areas.

The existing mainline connections are being retained with new access tracks and stabling sidings being installed to suit the new depot’s operations. The depot is also being future proofed through the installation of overhead line equipment along all the operational tracks.

In addition to the new depot and support buildings VolkerFitzpatrick are also upgrading the site’s utility services. These new services will provide fuelling and tanking for train sets and facilities for emptying toilet tanks to the foul sewer. Externally, the internal roadways, walking routes and car parks are also being refurbished. This project won the Chartered Institute of Water and Environmental Management 2014 award in recognition of the innovative remediation of over 16,000 tonnes of excavated materials. A variety of treatment methods were used from innovative E-Clay® technology through to segregating and screening to generate engineering backfill for reuse on site.
