ABB Project Managment

ABB asked JBA to assist them in introducing a Health and Safety management system specifically for projects that would be applicable, independent of location, in order to provide consistency across global operations and address major concerns around incident and accident rates on global projects. Working closely with our client we created an ABB Standard for Project Safety Management and significantly reduced incident and accidents over a three-year period.

Before

The Client was experiencing a significant number of accidents and injuries across their global operations. Whilst HSE systems were already in place for project sites in compliance with OHSAS18001, the system was not working effectively. The current focus was on site rules rather than on the quality of management utilising a risk-based approach. This was further compounded in those projects that were started in Europe and the US, where little attention was paid to local cultural and management issues and in variations in standards as operated by local contractors and clients.

"We knew this would be a big challenge but it has reduced our accident and incident rates, improved our management system and the behaviour of our own staff together with our contractors and surprisingly, clients."

After

  • A significant reduction in the rates of incidents and accidents measured over a 3 year period since the intervention.
  • A much more robust approach to managing projects globally and especially in the case of "imported" projects.
  • Clients value our service more highly as a result of the programme as evidenced in comparative rating surveys of competitors , leading to further sales.
  • This intervention also influenced the risk management behaviours of subcontractors.
  • Overall the assignment was recognised as enhancing ABB’s reputation and ethical values.
